About Us
peopleCare Tavistock is where the peopleCare story first began. The organization was founded in 1967 by LeRoy and Ruth Schlegel in an old schoolhouse in Tavistock. Since then, the home has remained closely connected to the local community. The original long-term care home was built in the 1970s and has been a familiar part of Tavistock for decades. In 2024, a brand-new 128-bed long-term care home opened just behind the original building, bringing updated spaces and modern design to the property. The new home is divided into four smaller living areas, each with 32 residents. These areas are named after local streets, which reflects the strong connection many residents have to the community. There is also a secure care area designed to support residents living with different stages of dementia. Residents can choose between private and basic rooms. The rooms are furnished, but residents are encouraged to bring personal items and small pieces of furniture to make the space feel more like home. The home includes several shared spaces for residents and families, such as lounges, a café and bistro, a spiritual and event space, and a stayover suite for visiting family members. There are also outdoor terraces and a secure courtyard where residents can spend time outside. A range of daily activities is offered to keep residents engaged, with both small group and larger group programs available. Overall, peopleCare Tavistock combines a long history in the community with a newly built home designed to provide a comfortable and supportive living environment for residents.
