About Us
Great Northern Retirement Home has been a proud member of the Sault Ste Marie community since opening its doors to residents in September 1989. Conveniently located in front of the Sault Area Hospital in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, it offers a spacious three-story environment tailored to the residents and their lifestyle. The staff takes pride in caring for all aspects of individual needs. The residence is committed to real living, real people, and a real community, providing real choices and real comfort to create a real home.
Levels of Care
The residence offers Independent Living, where residents are relatively independent and self-sufficient, with emergency nursing assistance provided. Basic Living adds to Independent Living with assistance for one bath per week, medication administration, insulin administration, and oxygen management. Assisted Living is available for existing residents, providing extra care including daily housekeeping, assistance to and from the dining area, personal care, incontinence care, and regular checks. Convalescent or temporary stays are also offered upon availability.
Accommodation Options
Rooms or suites are nestled conveniently around social areas and are all wheelchair accessible. They include closets, a four-piece bath with handrails, and an emergency call bell system. Residents can furnish and decorate their rooms to their unique tastes, with larger suites available that include a full kitchenette.
Support Services
The Great Northern Nursing Staff provides professional care for every personal need. Dedicated service providers within the home add extra care to ensure every resident's safety and comfort. All rooms include an emergency call bell system to alert nursing staff if needed. Medication administration includes physician contact, pharmacy reordering, and monitoring.
Amenities
The residence features a bright lounge, recreation room, and gracious dining rooms. All rooms are wheelchair accessible and include closets, a four-piece bath with handrails, and thermostat controls for personal comfort. There is a recently updated private outdoor patio area. Social areas include the Family Dining Room, Chapel, Second Floor Social Lounge, and Third Floor Fireside Lounge.
Activities
The Activity Department offers a variety of programs reflecting residents' interests, developed through Resident Council meetings, leisure assessments, and daily conversations. Monthly calendars and newsletters keep residents informed, and friends and family are encouraged to participate. Special annual events include Valentine's Social, St Patrick's Day Social, and Christmas Cheer, among others. Emotional programs include friendly visitor programs and pet therapy sessions. Spiritual programs feature chapel services with interdenominational services and hymn sings. Stimulating programs include bingo, crafts, and trivia. Physical programs offer exercise classes, carpet bowling, and bocce ball. Social programs feature musical entertainment, coffee socials, and BBQs in the summer.
Dining
Dining is an important part of the day, with quality and care put into planning, preparation, and service. Residents enjoy three complete meals and snacks daily, with beverages available at all times. The menu offers alternatives to ensure residents have many choices at mealtime. Guests are welcome to join residents for meals, and the menu is designed using four-week cycles, published twice a year. Examples include a breakfast menu with choices of hot or cold cereal, a lunch menu with homemade soups, and a dinner menu featuring salmon loin or roast pork with gravy.
